Visiting the DMZ and North Korea a bit
Well the countdown to summer vacation is beyond on. I am wore out and ready for my break. My vacation is pretty much all of August, which cant come fast enough. Due to the lack of funds in my account and fun college loan bills back home, my great traveling adventure will be nothing more then hanging at the beach and taking a fishing trip or two. The weather here has a bad habit of being great during the school week and then rainy on the weekend. Sounds about like it did when I lived in Charleston. The humidity here is pretty rough. I wouldnt mind it so much if my school would turn on the AC instead of just opening all the windows. I think I sweat about a gallon all day in class.
The big news was the last weekend me and a group of friends took a trip up the the very northern part of the country to go rafting, bungee jumping and to visit the DMZ (the most protected piece of land on Earth and the border between North and South Korea.) It was surreal sleeping about 2 miles away. We took a night hike into a clearing and saw all the walls, giant towers and spotlights in the distance. It was pretty crazy being surrounded by rice paddies and machine guns.
The rafting was a good time though it was very slow. Typical for Koreans, who I found out this weekend first hand, are not the best in the water. We then did some bungee jumping which was a rush but about made me piss my pants. The next day we went to the DMZ and it was like nothing you can imagine. Just tons of soldiers and walls.
This weekend I went to the beach all day. It is also the first offical day of beach season. It is insanely funny as Asians dont want to be tan as they view it as being a sign of being poor and working in the fields. The beach is covered from inch to inch with umbrellas, giant hats and fully clothed people in long sleeve shirts. There are markers and bouys in the water where you arent supposed to go past when you swim. Being taller then all Koreans, I wasnt allowed to go past my nipples. I was trying to snorkel and the whole time I was being stared at by the 100 lifeguards and all the lifeguard boats. I actually got pissed off when they screamed and blew whistles at me for even being close to boundries. At that point I laughed and threw my hands up as to say WTF. Its no wonder all the men carry little pink poodles around and dress like they are going to a gay bar.
Well hope everyone had a great 4th of July and is having a good summer. Miss you and America a ton, especially Mexican food. God Bless and be safe.
